How does the Eucharist lead me closer to the poor?

The   Church   emphasizes   the   connection   between Eucharistic devotion and care for the poor. As Pope Francis explains, "The one who is fed and nourished by the very body and blood of Christ cannot remain unaffected when he sees his brothers suffering want and hunger." Take, for example, the witness of Mother Teresa. By recognizing Jesus' presence in the Eucharist under the appearance of bread and wine, she also was able to see the face of Christ in those who are poor and suffering. "We must pray to Jesus to give us that tenderness of the Eucharist. Unless we believe and see Jesus in the appearance of bread on the altar, we will not be able to see him in the distressing disguise of the poor."

St. John Chrysostom warned against a Eucharistic devotion that neglects the poor: "Do you wish to honor the body of Christ? Do not ignore him when he is naked. Do not pay homage in the temple clad in silk only then to neglect him outside where he suffers cold and nakedness. He who said: 'This is my body' is the same One who said: 'You saw me hungry and you gave me no food."

Quilts of Valor
We are compiling a list of service members or living veterans who served. If there is someone from our parish, either yourself or nominate someone, please click here for a Request Form as we would like to start presenting A Quilt of Valor® (QOV).  It is awarded to a Service Member or Veteran who has served our country with bravery, honor and dedication. The Quilt says unequivocally, “Thank you for your service and sacrifice in serving our nation.” St. Luke Sew Blessed Quilters of Slinger is grateful to have a group of women from surrounding churches that faithfully sew and make these beautiful quilts for our veterans. If there is anyone interested in joining them, you are more than welcome; please contact Donna Gross 262-707-5730. And if anyone is interested in helping the St. Luke Blessed Quilters defray costs for the Quilts of Valor for fabrics and supplies please place in the box marked Quilts of Valor.
